The Alpha-1 Association is a non-profit, voluntary health organization that was formed to provide information and support to individuals and families affected by alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency. Alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency is a rare hereditary metabolic disease characterized by low levels of the enzyme alpha-1-antitrypsin and progressive degenerative and destructive changes in the lungs. Founded in 1991, the organization functions as a clearinghouse for information to assist healthcare professionals and affected individuals. In addition, it engages in patient advocacy and aids in the support of medical research into the control and cure of alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency. Educational materials produced by the association include brochures, newsletters, and videos.
